My Top Tips

You know your child best

Everyone has an opinion; teachers, family members, people judging you in the street. Take some time to listen to your instinct, and know that it is ok if a certain environment is not right for your child. There will always be people telling you what you should or should not be doing, but you will always know your child best.

Don’t be put off by the word ‘No’

It is inevitable you will receive push back from professionals at some point on your journey with a child with special educational needs, and that is ok. Try to keep your goal in the forefront of your mind and keep going! There may be different avenues that you are not yet aware of, and different people who can offer advice and solutions just around the corner. Oftentimes in such a busy system, the ones who shout the loudest and continue to pursue their goal, are the ones who are heard.

Keep everything in writing

There are usually lots of conversations involved with a child with special educational needs, whether this be at the school gate, in meetings or on the telephone. You may need the information discussed as use of evidence at a later date. After a verbal conversation, try to remember to email a summary of the topics discussed and actions agreed to the appropriate parties.

Social media is your friend

It can feel like a very lonely place trying to find the right support, but I promise you that you are not alone and there a families who have been through or are going through similar challenges. Social Media groups for parents can offer great support and there are often specific groups for people local to your area.

You can do this!

It is not always easy, but you CAN advocate for your child and reach your goal. Take the down days and rest you need, and then get back out there and keep fighting.
